3 weeks of Internship
So after a while, back again.
Internship in Semarang, for 3 weeks now, 2 weeks in the 'Penyakit Dalam' and 1 week in the Ruang Anak. Or 2 weeks internal medicine, and 1 week in the childrens ward.
So far an impressive episode, lots of new impressions and little time to contemplate and write about them.
In the internal medicine we saw all the typical tropical patiënts: Leptospirosis, Dengue, Thypoid fever and ofcourse HIV+TBC.
Leptospirosis is an hot issue atm, because as some may know and most who read it do not i guess, leptospirosis is a spirete which resides in water where enough rats poo and pie in and can enter a human by wounds/cracks in the feet. As our global heating screwed up the weather not only in europe but also in indonesiä, it is raining every day about now :P (though it gets better). Now you can say, so what? its tropical, it rains. IF you think that, that's correct if it was the wet season :P the funny part is that the wet season SHOULD have ended 2 months ago, apperently it didn't.
But i am getting away from the point. Semarang his old city is low, bad drainage, lots of rain and an utter load of rats and loads of garbage (old town isn't the cleanest part in semarang). Which all sums up to: loads of leptospirosis.
We only saw the worst patiënts on our ward, since the RSDK is the universital and 3rd line hospital of the region (3million patiënts), all the worst cases are brought there for a last change.
Still it was rather impressive and sad, to see 4 out of the 6 patiënts with leptospirosis die even though the best effort was taken in supporting them. It really humbles you and makes it clear just how dangerous the diseases here may be.
Also i got sick myself in the 2nd week, (Crohn and not watching out with the food in the warung equals= STUPID), so instead of being the tough guy here i took some antibiotics myself, probably the first time in my life (unless my mum drugged me as a child that is).
About the childrens ward, and a really interresting boy with Thallasemia i will read in my next update, allong with the fun things we did (watching football, hiking, chinatown, churches, budhist temples, confucionist temple's, beautifull mosque's and more).
For now i am going to find my bed again, and will try to not forget to place some pictures with this story tomorrow :P

Ha, fijn , een nieuw bericht. Leuk wat te lezen over het ziekenhuis.
Ziekte van Weil in wel interessant om te zien, aangezien we het hier niet vaak zien, maar behoorlijk rottig om het te hebben. Je zult daar wel veel andere interessante ziektebeelden zien.
Je hebt inderdaad als kind wel 'ns antibiotica gekregen, er zat niets anders op met koorts en een flinke bronchitis ;-)
Ik hoop voor jullie dat de nattigheid onderhand eens op gaat houden, het weer is er behoorlijk van slag, zo te lezen.

Yes it is good to see and compare, but again, keep in mind that the RSDK only gets the worst cases. (yes Weil's disease, did you know that or looked it up mum? :P)
And yes tess, i did it in english again, mostly also for you, nice ain't it? :P Can you poke mon/arn btw, haven't gotten notice from them for over a month! sigh.

Leuke foto's joh! Hartstikke leuk om te zien hoe en waar je zit! We kijken al weer uit naar de volgende foto's cq berichten.
Hoi Maarten. Genoten van je mooie foto,s. Jammer dat je in het Engels schrijft, dus ik kan geen commentaar geven op je bericht. Volgens Tine gaat het goed met je. Hoop dat je ,je al lekker thuis voelt en dat je het gezellig hebt met je medewerkers. Hier gaat alles goed. Vele groeten van de oudjes uit Uden.

Ha Maarten, eindelijk eens de tijd genomen om je hele 'verhalenbundel' te lezen. I'm deeply impressed! Mooie foto's ook. Natuurlijk hoor ik Sanne voortdurend uit, maar voor deze infolijn ga ik toch wat vaker zitten. Tis de moeite! Zo te lezen heb je voorlopig aan water geen gebrek, maar verder lijkt het toch heel aardig te gaan. . . Wel heftig het ziekenhuisleven daar, maar volgens mij red je het prima. Deeply impressed of your stories that I have read on this site. I only wondered if I should continue in English of ben je je Nederlands nog niet verleerd daar? Ik zie dat je naast je werkzaamheden gelukkig ook tijd hebt om verder rond te kijken in het land, leuke ervaring.
Ik hoop dat je het daar naar je zin hebt ondanks dat het land natuurlijk totaal anders is dan het koude landje hier. Alhoewel, nu ik dit schrijf, genieten wij hier inmiddels ook van tropische temperaturen.
Ik wens je nog veel plezier, succes (en indien nodig sterkte) daar.

Hoi Maarten. Heb nu juist wat berichtjes gelezen en kan er uit opmaken dat het je goed gaat. Van jou persoonlijk zelf heb ik nog niets kunnen lezen. Als het in het Engels is kan ik het toch niet lezen op enkele woordjes na. Hier gaat alles prima, alleen is het hier al een week Tropisch heet. Dit is niet goed voor de oudere mensen. Morgen zou het op plaatsen 36graden worden. Hopelijk krijgen we spoedig een berichtje van jou zelf en dan in Nederlands. Wens je nog een mooi en leerzaam verblijf en het allerbeste van oma en opa uit het verre Uden.
Geachte collega, Beste Maarten,
Eindelijk heb ik wat tijd gevonden om je verhalen te lezen en hierop te reageren. Sorry dat het zo lang duurde, je zat er vast smachtend op te wachten.
Opvallend is de enthousiaste manier waarop je alles beschrijft. Zo te horen voel je je op je plek. Het boeddhisten feest lijkt me ook indrukwekkend. Jammer dat je er twee uur van gemist hebt:) Ook de foto's die ik gezien heb, laten een schitterende omgeving zien.
Daarnaast kom je voor Nederlandse begrippen zeldzame ziektebeelden tegen, die eveneens lastig te behandelen zijn. Het is confronterend lijkt me dat de mortaliteit ondanks optimale supportive care, hoog is.
Nog een grappig moment, welke ik graag met je wil delen:
Gisteren (2/7/10) kwam ik je moeder tegen voor de lift van het Jeroen Bosch Ziekenhuis. Ze herkende mij van een foto. Echt toevallig!
Maarten, doe je best de komende tijd, geniet ervan en we spreken elkaar snel weer.
